Emotional Intelligence Is The Means
Years ago it became clear to me that while the development of the competencies of emotional intelligence were valuable and important; that was not the ultimate prize, which is liberating your most powerful and creative authentic self.
What Is Authentic Self And Why Do You Want It?
Your authentic self is the unaltered, undiluted expression of your unique talents, gifts and abilities, core values and life purpose. In contrast to the “socialized” self or “pseudo-self” that is made of the behaviors you were convinced you needed to adopt to be accepted and approved of.
Authenticity makes you credible, trustworthy, effective and happy. Straining to please, seeking approval and compromising your values makes you untrustworthy, limited, stressed and unfulfilled. Authenticity is a prerequisite for leadership and a fulfilling life.
The Importance of Awareness
The principles and practices that are most effective in developing emotional intelligence cause you to directly access and express authentic self. For example:
Fundamental to the development of all other emotional intelligence skills is the skill of emotional self-awareness. Emotional awareness includes the ability to recognize your emotions and their affect on your thoughts and actions.
Effective development of this skill leads to a higher level of consciousness and the ability, and the discrimination to mindfully choose what is most authentic and purposeful, moment-to-moment.
Personal Responsibility Is Essential
The development and use of a high level of emotional and social skill is dependent on personal responsibility – a practice and a context for being in which you acknowledge that you are the source of your experience of life. And, that while you have no control over others you have absolute control over what you choose to think say and do.
Without personal responsibility you cannot effectively accept and use your own emotions nor successfully relate with others. More importantly without personal responsibility you can never own your true power and the ability to be self-determining. As a leader, without the ability to consistently demonstrate personal responsibility you will not foster it in those you wish to positively influence. Personal responsibility is easy to say and more difficult to develop. It is uniquely integrated into each component of The EQ At Work Method, and present in each coaching session at an almost subliminal way.
Values and Purpose Guide Meaningful Action To Create Results
Awareness without action creates illusion. To manifest results in the physical world, you must take action. When that action is the result of a conscious choice, guided by your core values and purposes your results are most successful and fulfilling.
A Combination of Learning, Practice And Application Supported By Coaching
The EQ At Work Method™ proceeds through a step-by-step process of creating awareness, taking responsibility, developing skill, making informed choices and taking purposeful action. Development occurs with the support of a combination of learning, practice and application and support over time and is facilitated by coaching. Goal setting and progress evaluation is aided by assessment and review of fifty defined competencies.
